Essential Pre-Filing Document Checklist
Filing an accurate ITR requires matching your disclosures against the automated data feeds maintained by the Income Tax Department. Collect these documents before beginning:
- Form 16 / 16A: Certificate of tax deducted at source by your employer or clients.
- Annual Information Statement (AIS) & Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS): Comprehensive record of mutual fund transactions, share sales, dividend income, and high-value savings interest.
- Form 26AS: Consolidated tax credit statement showing TDS, TCS, and Advance Tax paid.
- Bank Account Statements & Interest Certificates: For all active bank accounts held during the financial year.
- Capital Gains Statements: From your stockbroker or mutual fund RTA (CAMS/KFintech).
How to Choose the Correct ITR Form
Selecting the wrong ITR form makes your return defective under Section 139(9):
- ITR-1 (Sahaj): For resident individuals with total income up to ₹50 Lakhs from Salary, 1 House Property, and Other Sources (interest/dividends). Cannot be used if you have capital gains or directorship in a company.
- ITR-2: For individuals and HUFs with income from salary, multiple house properties, and capital gains (shares, crypto, property).
- ITR-3: For individuals and HUFs carrying on a proprietary business or profession, partners in a firm, or active stock/F&O traders.
- ITR-4 (Sugam): For resident individuals, HUFs, and firms with presumptive business income under Section 44AD/44ADA.
Presumptive Taxation for Freelancers & Consultants (Sec 44ADA)
Software developers, designers, legal professionals, and medical practitioners with gross professional receipts up to ₹75 Lakhs (if 95% of receipts are digital) can declare 50% of gross receipts as taxable profit under Section 44ADA without maintaining detailed books of accounts or undergoing a mandatory tax audit.
Top 5 Errors That Trigger Defective Return Notices
- Omitting Savings Account Interest: All savings interest must be reported under "Income from Other Sources" (with eligible deduction under 80TTA up to ₹10,000 for non-seniors).
- Job Switch Discrepancies: Changing jobs mid-year often results in both employers granting the ₹75,000 standard deduction and basic exemption, leading to substantial tax shortfall at year-end.
- Unreported Foreign Assets: Holding foreign shares (e.g. US stock RSUs/ESOPs) requires mandatory disclosure in Schedule FA, even if dividend income is minor.
- Mismatch with AIS/TIS: Failing to report off-market transactions or mutual fund switches captured in AIS.
- Failure to E-Verify within 30 Days: An unverified return is treated as invalid (never filed), inviting late fees under Section 234F.
E-Verification & CPC Bangalore Processing
Once submitted, verify your ITR immediately via Aadhaar OTP, NetBanking, or DSC. CPC Bangalore processes verified returns and issues Section 143(1) intimation notices. If a refund is due, ensure your bank account is pre-validated with matching PAN details on the e-filing portal.
