How to Resolve AIS Discrepancies, 26AS Mismatches, and Excess TDS Deductions

What is AIS and How Does It Differ From Form 26AS?

While Form 26AS is primarily a ledger of taxes deducted (TDS), collected (TCS), and deposited on your PAN, the Annual Information Statement (AIS) is a comprehensive financial intelligence dossier. AIS aggregates data from banks, registrar offices, stock exchanges, mutual fund houses, and credit card issuers under the Statement of Financial Transactions (SFT).

Common Causes of AIS & 26AS Mismatches

Discrepancies frequently occur due to reporting errors by third-party reporting entities:

  • Duplicate Reporting: A single stock sale or mutual fund redemption reported twice by both the broker and the depository (NSDL/CDSL).
  • Joint Bank Accounts: 100% of interest or property sale proceeds reported on the primary account holder's PAN, even when funds belong equally to joint holders.
  • Wrong PAN Quoted by Deductor: Employer or bank deducted tax correctly but mistyped your PAN on Form 24Q/26Q.
  • Delayed TDS Returns by Clients: Deductors who deducted TDS in March but failed to upload TDS returns before May 31st.

How to Submit Online Feedback on Incorrect AIS Entries

If you discover transactions in AIS that do not belong to you or are duplicated, submit feedback directly on the portal:

  1. Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal and click on AIS tab.
  2. Navigate to the relevant section (e.g. SFT Information or TDS Information).
  3. Click on the disputed entry and select the appropriate feedback option:
    • "Information is not correct"
    • "Information relates to other PAN/Year"
    • "Information is duplicate / included in other information"
    • "Information is denied"
  4. Submit your feedback. The modified value will reflect in your Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS).

Resolving TDS Credit Mismatches with Deductors

If Form 26AS shows less TDS than what was deducted from your payments, you cannot simply claim the uncredited amount in your ITR. You must contact the deductor and request them to file a TDS Correction Statement (Form 24Q/26Q correction). Once processed on TRACES, the credit will appear in your 26AS.

Claiming Your Excess TDS Refund in ITR

If your total advance tax and TDS credits exceed your final tax liability, filing your ITR generates an automated refund order. Ensure your bank account is active and pre-validated with matching PAN details. Refund amounts typically credit within 15 to 45 days post-verification.

Section 154 Rectification Support with CP Associates

If you have received an intimation order with tax demand due to a TDS mismatch, our CA team files rectification petitions under Section 154 and coordinates with assessment units to clear erroneous demands.
